HIV Among Women on the Rise

Women now account for 40 percent of newly diagnosed HIV infections in the world and represent the most rapidly growing segment of the HIV-infected population.

"The disease, first introduced into the homosexual male population in the U.S., is now a heterosexual disease. That fact is not well understood among women," says Kathleen Squires, M.D., director of the Women's AIDS Clinic at UAB. While HIV among women is on the rise, research is lagging. "Most studies done today involve men. It's imperative to understand the scope of HIV infection in women, who are at the epicenter of the epidemic, if we are to mount an aggressive and effective response."
