I'm Fine, Coach

Coaches and trainers need to be careful in deciding when an athlete who has taken a blow to the head should return to their sport, says the head of UAB's new Sports-Related Concussion Program. "Athletes at all levels want to play," says UAB neuropsychologist Paul Blanton, Ph.D. "A player recovering from a concussion is likely to shrug off any symptoms and tell the coach that they are fine." Blanton says those who make decisions on allowing a player to return to action following a head injury need input from medical professionals trained in recognizing and treating concussions.
