Newswise — Ever heard of the little orange creature in the Antarctic sea that uses kidnapping to make itself unappetizing to its predators? Fish love to eat amphipods " which look like little orange shrimp " but hate sea butterflies. Amphipods grab the butterflies and wear them like backpacks for protection.
This is just one of the discoveries made by members of UAB's Antarctic research team that could ultimately lead to understanding and fighting a number of human diseases. Now they are back in Antarctica and have added conservation and environmental research on the effects of global warming on seaweeds, a vital part of the Antarctic food chain.
