Newswise — The Institute for Ocean Conservation Science at Stony Brook University is thrilled to announce that jewelry designer Diana Widman has created a dazzling new fish and water pendant just in time for holiday gift-giving, and will donate 50 percent of net proceeds to the Institute in support of vital marine science research and conservation efforts around the world.

The sterling silver pendant, with a faux-diamond fish eye, is a striking jewelry version of the Institute’s logo and was designed exclusively for the Institute. The versatile pendant is what Widman calls “elegance for every day.” By wearing it, you are fashionably voicing your support for the Institute’s commitment to protect endangered and threatened marine species, end the wasteful shark-fin trade, and build support for smarter fisheries management. The pendants just hit the market this week and are available for $150 each from Diana Widman Design (http://widmandesign.com), who crafts one-of-a-kind fine jewelry designs. This is the first item in a new SeaGems jewelry line that Widman decided to create after a “life-altering” expedition to Antarctica in 2008 with the Institute’s Executive Director, Dr. Ellen Pikitch. Together, they witnessed the beauty of the world’s harshest, and least spoiled, marine environment.

“As I learned more about Dr. Pikitch’s mission to reverse the destruction of our oceans and their inhabitants, I was deeply affected,” Widman recalled. “As a jeweler and metalsmith, I was inspired to use my creativity and my business to further a cause that has such critical importance to the health of our planet and future generations.”

Dr. Pikitch, who is also a Professor at Stony Brook University, said, “I’m thrilled to be working with a designer whose enormous creativity and talent is matched by her love of the sea. Diana and I share a passion for saving the ocean and its threatened creatures, and she has created a beautiful pendant that symbolizes that passion. By purchasing this pendant for themselves or as a meaningful gift, many others can join our commitment to safeguarding marine environments worldwide.”

The pendant can also be made to order in 18KT yellow gold with a diamond fish eye, for $1,000 each. Both pendants come with a 16” black leather neck cord. To place an order, email [email protected]; please include your credit card information (including security code) and postal mailing address. Orders can also be placed by phone with the Widman Design Studio at 847.235.1686.

The Institute for Ocean Conservation Science at Stony Brook University is dedicated to advancing ocean conservation through science. The Institute transforms real-world policy while pursuing serious science, both of which are essential for ocean health. Visit http://oceanconservationscience.org.
