The stars of the upcoming feature film To The Bone including Lily Collins, Keanu Reeves and Retta, star in the Nine Truths About Eating Disorders, a public service announcement based on a document developed by the Academy for Eating Disorders (AED) to clarify public understanding of and dispel the many myths about eating disorders. In 2015, the AED released this important, scientifically backed document, which was produced in collaboration with eating disorder expert and leading researcher, Dr. Cynthia Bulik, PhD, FAED, and 11 other key eating disorder organizations. The Nine Truths is based on Dr. Bulik’s 2014 “9 Eating Disorders Myths Busted” talk at the National Institute of Mental Health. This celebrity-filled video of the Nine Truths will premiere to promote the World Eating Disorders Action Day.
“After I shared the Nine Truths initiative with the cast, they generously volunteered to produce this special version of a reading of the Nine Truths. AED had just finished a video version of the Truths in different languages from around the world. We have now added another important voice—celebrity. Their star power will help these important messages reach a much wider audience,” says Dr. Lauren Muhlheim, AED board member, who served as a consultant and eating disorder expert on To the Bone.
Developed as a grassroots effort, World Eating Disorders Action Day is dedicated to uniting eating disorder advocates, professionals, and those affected across the globe. On June 2nd, social media will be used to break stigma and raise awareness about the science, prevalence, and treatment of eating disorders. Led by global leaders in the field, consecutive hours of engaging and informational Tweet Chats will be held, and the hashtag #WeDoAct will promote events and information throughout the day. World Eating Disorders Action Day currently has the support of over 200 participating organizations representing over 40 countries around the globe—and is growing daily! Anyone is welcome to join this worldwide advocacy.
