UAB has received a three-year, $805,000 grant from the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality to establish one of seven national Centers for Education and Research on Therapeutics (CERT) of musculoskeletal disorders such as arthritis and osteoporosis.

The center will evaluate the effectiveness and safety of new therapies for musculoskeletal disorders and will guide physicians in the use of these therapies.

"In just the past five years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of new therapies approved to treat musculoskeletal disorders," says Kenneth Saag, M.D., director of the UAB center. "The aim is to make physicians aware of advances in therapeutics in order to improve the standard of care for patients."
