Newswise — Judgment on the widespread use of antimicrobials, including antibiotics, in the production of animals intended for human consumption will headline technical presentations during this year's Institute of Food Technologists' Annual Meeting + FOOD EXPO®, the world's largest annual food science forum and exposition, June 24-28.

To be released here Monday, June 26, the IFT Expert Report: Antimicrobial Resistance—Implications for the Food System, will address this highly contested issue in the manner consistent with other exhaustive, informative IFT Expert Reports on functional foods (2005), emerging microbiological food safety issues (2002), and biotechnology and foods (2000).

Also during this Monday session IFT will release scientific analyses summarizing the state-of-the-science in four areas of food. These IFT Scientific Status Summaries will address organics, nanotechnology, mycotoxins, and packaging.

Major themes during this year's IFT Annual Meeting technical program will be: Food Defense/Bioterrorism; Functional Foods, Globalization; and Food Allergens.
