Drinking plenty of fluids during the heat of summer is especially important for people taking medications, whose effects can become more pronounced with dehydration.

The combination of depleted fluid volume and medication can lead to complications such as dangerously low blood pressure," says David Calhoun, M.D., UAB director of UAB's Hypertension Clinic. "This is particularly true for older patients who are sensitive to becoming dehydrated."

People taking diuretics also are particularly vulnerable to dehydration. Early signs of dehydration include increased thirst and lightheadedness upon standing up.
