Mother's Milk Is Best

A Birmingham woman with newborn triplets is the quintessential poster mom for World Breastfeeding Week, Aug. 1-7, designed to generate public awareness and support for breastfeeding. "Breastfeeding is especially important for premature babies," says Laura Fiveash, a dietician and doctoral candidate in maternal and child health at UAB. "Breast milk has immunoglobulins and other nutrients that help babies ward off infections and decrease the risk for some acute and chronic diseases. It also provides enormous advantages with regard to general health, growth and development."

Fiveash's triplets were born in April at 26 weeks. Two have already gone home to be with mom. Fiveash pumps between 40 and 50 ounces of milk each day for her growing brood.
