New Arthritis Drugs

A multi-center, international pilot study of two new drugs to treat patients with rheumatoid arthritis has found the drugs to be safe and effective in treating the disease. Larry Moreland, M.D., professor of medicine at UAB, will present findings during the American College of Rheumatology's Annual Scientific Meeting, Nov. 11-15, in San Francisco. "The drugs work differently than those currently on the market to treat rheumatoid arthritis," Moreland says. "These drugs target a different part of the immune system, working to inhibit the activation of damage-causing T-cells." The drugs may one day offer patients an alternative treatment. "This is just the first step, but findings are promising."
