A new cancer-causing gene that appears to play a role in the development of cancer of the oral cavity and the breast has been identified at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.

"This oncogene, called GKLF, is overexpressed in virtually all cancers of the oral cavity and about 70 percent of breast carcinomas," according to J. Michael Ruppert, M.D., Ph.D.

Ruppert led a UAB team that described the discovery of GKLF in the journal Cancer Research.

"GKLF overexpression occurs in even the earliest forms of breast cancer. It obviously will be a therapeutic target for drug discovery and other treatment strategies to reverse the malignant behavior of cells."
