New Tobacco-Free Families Program

The department of family medicine at UAB has received a four-year, $4.4 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to study a program aimed at reducing the rate of smoking among women of child-bearing age.

"Prior studies have targeted pregnant women who smoke," says Myra Crawford, Ph.D., research associate professor at UAB. "This study is aimed at reaching women before they become pregnant." The Alabama Tobacco-Free Families program focuses on increasing the public's awareness of the risks of tobacco use to mother, fetus and infant. "Because studies have shown that 80 percent of pregnant women who smoke live with someone who smokes, the program also encourages male partners to adopt a tobacco-free lifestyle."
