New Tools in Fight Against Glaucoma

New imaging tools at UAB can help detect changes in the progression of glaucoma as many as five years earlier than traditional diagnostic methods, says UAB ophthalmologist Christopher Girkin, M.D., director of the Optic Nerve and Retinal Imaging Center. The equipment detects subtle changes in the eyes of glaucoma patients, allowing ophthalmologists to move more quickly with aggressive treatment for the disease. "Physicians can compare an image taken today to one taken weeks or months before. If the images indicate the disease is worsening, then advancing treatment may be initiated. Early treatment of glaucoma gives patients the best chance of retaining sight."
