Newswise — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration just approved the marketing of a sunscreen that claims to block cancer-causing sunrays. But for those who forget to apply the new product, eventually it may be possible to reverse cellular skin damage caused by the sun. Craig Elmets, M.D., chair of the UAB Department of Dermatology, heads a national, multi-center clinical trial of dimericine, which pharmaceutical company AGI Dermatics hopes will become a "morning after" crème that can repair sun-damaged skin. "We're looking at it initially for people at high-risk of contracting skin cancer, such as immunologically compromised kidney transplant patients, but I'd expect that someday dimericine would be included in sunscreen and makeup products for the general public."
