Newswise — Nurses keep the tools they use most frequently closest, for when they’re needed for patient care.

According to a recent poll, in addition to scissors, calculators and other tools needed at the bedside, critical care nurses often carry pocket reference cards from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), the leading source for the latest in critical care nursing expertise. AACN has updated its popular quick reference guides, offering nurses fast facts at their fingertips on a variety of topics. Approximately 20 active clinical nursing experts and AACN staff reviewed and updated the reference cards based on the latest standards.

These pocket-sized references are consistent top sellers in AACN’s online bookstore and at the annual National Teaching Institute & Critical Care Exposition.

“Nurses frequently buy AACN pocket cards for themselves and as gifts for their colleagues,” said Linda Bell, RN, MSN, clinical practice specialist at AACN. “Hospitals and nursing schools also use them in classes or their critical care orientation.”

The most popular reference cards contain information about: • hemodynamic management • cardiovascular assessment • cardiac medications • dysrhythmia recognition • pulmonary management

“I use the AACN Researching the Evidence pocket reference card at least twice a week,” said Patricia A. Baker, RN, MS, CNS, CCRN, CCNS, a critical care clinical nurse specialist at Winchester Medical Center in Virginia. “It’s compact, yet holds the right amount of key information so I can quickly help a bedside nurse develop a research question or work on a class project.”

Other topics include pediatric critical care, acute kidney injury, sepsis, hematology, medication calculation, laboratory values and neurological assessment.

The full-color, two-sided reference cards are accordion folded. The laminated cards can be wiped clean and fit easily in any scrub or smock pocket.

Sets of all 13 cards are now available for $26 for AACN members and $52 for non-members, a savings of 20 percent if the set was purchased individually. Visit the AACN bookstore at www.aacn.org for more information about the pocket reference cards and other clinical references and products.

The regular price for individual cards is $2.50 for AACN members and $5 for non-members, with discounts available for bulk purchases.
