Osteoporosis is a women's disease, right? Wrong, say researchers at UAB, who are part of a national trial to study the condition in men.

"The risk of osteoporosis in men has not received a great deal of research attention, even though their risk of fractures is high," said Cora E. Lewis, M.D., associate professor of preventive medicine and principal investigator of the study. Although American women are four times more likely to develop osteoporosis than men, an estimated one-third of the hip fractures worldwide occur in men. Men are also much more likely than 20 years ago to live into their eighth and ninth decade, the ages when osteoporosis is most troublesome.
