PHARMACEUTICAL RESEARCH MIRRORS SOCIETIES GREATEST HEALTH CONCERNS

Scientists Announce Latest Breakthroughs on Cancer, Diabetes and Asthma Research at Annual Meeting of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists

Alexandria, VA -- Oct. 15, 1997 -- Five thousand researchers gathering in Boston, Massachusetts for the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS), Nov. 2-6, 1997 will present contributed papers responding to societies most chronic medical issues. From cancer to diabetes to asthma, the following top-lines the presented research. Complete abstracts are available by calling Lisa Mozloom or Nicolle Ugarriza at 305-672-4422.

∑ ASTHMA ó The phasing out of chlorofluorocarbon propellants has caused the pharmaceutical industry to develop alternative asthma inhalers using novel technologies. By using a coiled spring, researchers have found that a new soft-mist is a much better delivery system than conventional metered dose inhalers. Selected for clinical trials. (Tracking # 0496)

∑ CANCER ó The blood-brain barrier restricts the brain uptake of most chemotherapeutic drugs and limits their efficacy in treating brain tumors. Research supported by the NIH shows that a modification of melphalan allows for the drug to be transported into the brain without being toxic, and is in fact taken to the brain 100 times more rapidly than todayís commonly-used melphalan. (Tracking # 0412)

∑ SUSTAINED RELEASED TABLETS ó Microspheres containing protein were found to be effective for 100 days when introduced into the body. (Tracking # 0863)

∑ ULCERS ó A new three-layer matrix tablet is shown to release anti-ulcer medication into the G.I. tract over a five to seven hour period. The system creates gas that delivers tetracycline and metronidazole into the stomach without inflammation. Patent pending. (Tracking # 1134)

In addition to research presentations, AAPS is sponsoring a number of roundtable symposiums. Topics include: Biotechnology, The Future of Transmucosal Delivery and Evolution of FDA Guidances: Does the Process Work?

AAPS is a professional, scientific society of more than 7,000 members employed in academia, industry, government and other research institutes worldwide. Founded in 1986, the goal of AAPS is to improve human health through the development of better pharmaceuticals. For more information about AAPS, visit our Web site at http//www.aaps.org.
