Pool-Safety Tips

Of the 850 paralyzing spinal cord injuries (SCIs) that result from diving accidents each year, more than 300 occur at home pools. A majority of pool-related SCIs end up with paralysis of all four limbs, according to Michael DeVivo, Dr. P.H., of UAB's Spain Rehabilitation Center.

The center houses a national database for spinal cord injuries.

How safe is your pool? Use this checklist to reduce the risk of injuries: Are depth indicators clearly visible? Is the pool area well lighted during use? Do guests consume alcohol? Are pool use hours enforced? Is the pool secured by a fence when not in use? Is there a designated diving area? Is someone trained in water safety at the pool?
