Post-Hospital Rehabilitation

Shorter hospital stays cause rehabilitation centers to find creative ways to provide their services in the allotted time. Amie Jackson, M.D., director of the UAB Spain Rehabilitation Center, sees people with traumatic injuries of the spinal cord and brain going to her facility still in need of medical recovery and unable to complete rehabilitation. Stressed families are not ready to be effectively educated in their roles.

"Much rehabilitation now is moving into the home setting, and programs such as our home-teleconferencing project are being set up to provide services to patients and their family caregivers in that setting." Another technique: after-center information days for patients/families, such as one at UAB on July 21.
