Protect Your Vision From Sun Exposure

People who work or play outdoors face risks to their vision from prolonged sun exposure. "Sunlight presents two hazards that accumulate over a lifetime: ultraviolet radiation -- UVR -- and glare," says Leo Semes, O.D., of UAB's School of Optometry.

Cataract formation is the most significant risk from overexposure to UV rays. "People exposed to sunlight as a result of occupation or recreational pursuits should use UVR protection such as wide-brimmed hats or caps and sunglasses that offer 100 percent UVR protection." For glare protection, sunglasses should absorb at least 60 percent of visible light and be in neutral shades of grey, brown or green. Orange lenses may be beneficial to those at risk for age-related macular degeneration.
