When people become caregivers for a member of their family, they also become a vital part of the healthcare system. A home telehealth conferencing program at UAB's Spain Rehabilitation Center helps give the caregiver the support and training they need, says rehabilitation psychologist Tim Elliott, Ph.D. Family members first learn problem solving and relaxation methods in an in-center class. Then they participate in telehealth conferencing with video cameras attached to their televisions. "It's important that they can see us and we can see them. The program helps keep families from getting stressed, depressed and possibly even physically ill. It also acts as a lower-cost home health visit, perhaps preventing a costly return trip to the hospital."
