Research Hopes to Polish Off Fungus

Nail fungus infection (onychomycosis) affects millions of people. Presently, the best treatments are expensive oral prescription medications that have potential toxicity and drug interaction, or topical treatments that aren't very effective. An upcoming clinical trial under the direction of dermatologist Boni Elewski, M.D., will test a topical nail lacquer for treating this infection. The drug uses enhanced-permeation technology, which potentially would lead to better absorption of this therapeutic agent, called Onycofitex(tm). Elewski, a leading expert in onychomycosis research, says other delivery systems have proved to have limited applications, unpleasant chemical odors and are often irritating to skin and eye membranes. Onycofitex attacks various fungi, molds and yeasts known to cause nail-bed infection.
