Start Early For A Healthy Heart

With so much information on healthy hearts these days, it is sometimes hard to know where prevention begins. Cholesterol? Diet? Exercise? Although all of these are important when it comes to adult prevention, helping children and adolescents lead healthy lives is the best place to start. "Convincing them to avoid smoking is probably the most important health message we can give," says Bonnie Sanderson, RN, Ph.D., manager of UAB's cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation facility. "Teaching children to eat healthy and stay active follow." Primary prevention is a major priority achieved by formulating favorable habits in early childhood, particularly because it is much more difficult to change habits later in life. February is National Heart Month.
