Study to ID Blacks with Arthritis

UAB has received a $4.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to establish a registry of blacks with early rheumatoid arthritis. Over the next three years, researchers will seek to identify and register at least 600 blacks with the disease.

"Until now, studies investigating the cause and development of the disease have not included a fair representation of blacks," says Larry Moreland, M.D., professor of medicine at UAB. "We suspect the disease may be fundamentally different in blacks than in whites. The registry will provide a basis for further study. It will play a vital role in our understanding of how the disease develops and progresses in blacks."
