Suit Up Before You Strap In

Contestants may want to work up a heart-healthy exercise regimen before jumping into ABC's "The Chair." The new game show challenges contestants to maintain a steady heart rate while answering questions under stressful conditions. But a well-conditioned heart handles stressors much better than the average heart, whether the stress comes from creepy crocodiles, belligerent bosses or physical exertion, says UAB cardiac rehabilitation exercise physiologist Chris Schumann, MS. "A well-designed exercise program can benefit the cardiovascular and respiratory systems in many ways. It increases heart size, decreases resting and work heart rates, increases the heart's pumping capacity, decreases blood pressure and decreases the respiratory rate." February is National Heart Month.
