Newswise — New York University Professor Selçuk Şirin will deliver “Syrian Refugee Children: Food and Shelter is Not the Answer,” the 2016 Jacob K. Javits Lecture, on Mon., Nov. 14, 5:30 p.m. at NYU’s Lipton Hall (108 W. 3rd St. [between MacDougal and Sullivan streets]).
The lecture, free and open to the public, follows a recent United Nations report showing more than 3,700 people have died this year crossing the Mediterranean from North Africa to Europe—a toll that nearly equals all of last year’s losses.
Şirin, a professor in the Department of Applied Psychology at NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, is the author of Turkey at the Crossroads: Freedom or Misery (2015) and Muslim American Youth (2008). His current work focuses on immigrant children in New York, Muslim youth in the U.S., refugees in Turkey and Norway, and students at risk in U.S. schools.
In a co-authored report conducted for the Migration Policy Institute last year, Şirin found that 40 percent of the more than four million Syrian refugees who have fled Syria since civil war began are under the age of 12, with many encountering substantial disruptions to their education that will affect their learning once resettled.
Şirin, a native of Turkey and the Jacob K. Javits Visiting Professor for 2016-17, has also collaborated with UNESCO and Save the Children in their efforts to improve the lives of refugee children.
