Teeth and Tummies

When a class of drugs known as H2 blockers  Tagamet HB, Pepcid AC, Axid AR and Zantac  became available over the counter, the public was bombarded with information about heartburn and acid reflux. But what many may not know is that in addition to the discomfort those with chronic heartburn or acid reflux suffer, the condition can wreak havoc on the teeth.

"The constant presence of stomach acid in the mouth can cause erosion of the enamel and dentin," says UAB School of Dentistry professor Steven Filler, D.D.S. Treatment includes stopping the source of acid on the teeth by using antacids or H2 blockers. If left unchecked, it could ultimately mean bonding procedures, crowns or tooth extractions.
