Test Men for Infertility First

When a couple canít conceive and seek infertility help, itís the male partner who should be evaluated first, says UAB urologist Peter Kolettis, M.D.

ìOften the woman goes to a gynecology specialist first, but itís more productive and cost-effective to start with the man. If the man is the patient, the risk of surgical complications is lower and the prospect of multiple births becomes moot. îMale factors are involved in about half the cases of infertility in the United States. Half those cases may be helped. Newer techniques may involve microsurgery, interventional radiology, and intracycoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) combined with in vitro fertilization (IVF). Surgically recovering sperm from the testis may help men with severely low sperm counts.
