Newswise — Run Wang, M.D., professor and Cecil M. Crigler, M.D. Chair in Urology at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), has been elected to a two-year term as president of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA).

Sexual medicine is the study of sexual health. Sexual dysfunctions are a common problem affecting a reported 43 percent of women and 31 percent of men, according to an article in Current Psychiatry Reports.

“Dr. Wang is a leader in the field of male urology and men’s health and is one of the best surgeons for erectile dysfunction in the country,” said Steven Canfield, M.D., who is in charge of the urology programs at McGovern Medical School and Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center.

“It is a great honor to be elected president of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America, which is a preeminent society in this field,” said Canfield, who is the C.R. Bard, Inc./Edward J. McGuire, M.D. Distinguished Chair in Urology at UTHealth.

Wang has published extensively in the fields of urology, andrology, men’s health and sexual medicine. He is a coeditor, guest editor, associate editor, editorial member and reviewer for numerous journals and served as a panelist for the International Consultation on Sexual Medicine in 2009 and 2015.

Wang holds honorary, concurrent and visiting professorships at national and international universities. Also, he has a joint appointment as the director of sexual medicine in the Department of Urology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Established in 1994, the SMSNA objective has been to promote, encourage, and support the highest standards of practice, research, education and ethics in the study of the anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of human sexual function and dysfunction. Further, the SMSNA provides a forum for the free exchange and discussion of new ideas, thoughts and concepts in sexual medicine.
