Newswise — More than 1,900 of the world's leading stem cell researchers gathered in Cairns, Australia for the 5th ISSCR Annual Meeting this June. The conference marked the first ISSCR meeting held outside of North America and had the strongest worldwide representation in ISSCR history with 73 percent of attendees from outside North America.

Dr. Andrew Elefanty, the 5th ISSCR Annual Meeting's program committee chair and senior research fellow at Monash University in Australia, commented on the success of the meeting. "Global attendance was excellent. We were delighted to see such a strong representation from the Asia/Pacific region, a trend we hope will continue. The strength of the program really lies in the quality of the presentations and the willingness of the international stem cell community to support the meeting."

In addition, an unprecedented 297 travel fellowships totaling $297,000 were awarded by the ISSCR, the New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF), The California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) and the Australian Stem Cell Centre (ASCC) in order to assist with travel costs associated with attending the meeting.
