Newswise — Chicago (Nov. 3, 2015): The Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN) presents Dr. Rita McGuire, PhD, RN, PHCNS-BC, with the Rehabilitation Nursing Foundation (RNF)/American Nurses Foundation (ANF) Research Grant Award. RNF cosponsors this grant with ANF to offer $5,000 to a recipient whose research contributes to the advancement of nursing science and the enhancement of patient care.

Dr. McGuire’s research study, Balance Activities And Strengthening To Improve Condition [BASIC]: Training For Elders With Heart Failure, is a project designed to evaluate the effect of a multi-component balance and resistance training intervention on physical function, balance, and falls in older heart failure patients.

Dr. McGuire is a research assistant professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Lincoln Division, where she also earned her PhD in Nursing. She has experience working in cardiovascular disease nursing, emphasizing on exercise adherence and risk factor modification. As a result of working on the exercise of heart failure patients, Dr. McGuire became aware of the need to improve strength and balance in older heart failure patients to prevent falls.

“I am so honored and very appreciative of this funding from the RNF to support our work to improve strength and balance in older heart failure patients to prevent falls. With this award, we will be able to test the effects of a multi-component balance and resistance training intervention on physical function, balance, and falls in older heart failure patients and gather contextual information to enhance intervention strategies for this population. There is much work to be done to more fully understand the issues and address the absence of means to effectively intervene for these patients,” says Dr. McGuire.
