Ithaca College Assistant Professor Shoshanna Cole is available to comment on a potential manned mission to Mars.

On Tuesday, Oct. 11, U.S. President Barack Obama announced his goal to send a manned mission to Mars by the 2030s, with the intention to ultimately have astronauts remain on the planet for extended periods of time.

An assistant professor in Ithaca College’s Department of Physics and Astronomy, Cole is an expert on Mars and space exploration. She is able to discuss various aspects of a potential Mars mission, including how astronauts would make the trip and what conditions they would face both during the journey and on the planet’s surface.

Cole earned a Ph.D. in astronomy from Cornell University in 2015. She was a student collaborator on the Mars Exploration Rovers (Spirit and Opportunity) Team. In the course of her research on the geologic history of Mars, Cole discovered evidence that “acidic fog” once existed on the planet.

Cole is available for interviews and can be reached at [email protected], or by contacting Dan Verderosa in the Ithaca College Office of Marketing Communications at [email protected] or 607-274-1440.
