As Mother's Day, May 13, approaches, Michael Steinkampf, M.D., points out that there are nearly 5 million aspiring moms who are having difficulty conceiving. And, he points out that today more women are delaying pregnancy -- about 20 percent wait until after age 35.

"Yet with assisted reproductive procedures, many infertile couples' chance of pregnancy compares favorably to that of a fertile couple, which is 25 percent within any given month," says Steinkampf, director of UAB's Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Steinkampf suggests couples unable to conceive after a year of unprotected intercourse seek the advice of an infertility expert; the recommendation drops to six months if the woman is over 35.
