What Researchers In The Field Give Up

Researchers who spend months in the field often make personal sacrifices for the benefit of science. For example, UAB researchers who just returned from a 10-week trip to Antarctica missed Thanksgiving and Christmas with their families to study toxic defense compounds of Antarctic marine invertebrates that could one day play a role in the prevention of diseases like cystic fibrosis, cancer and AIDS. "The most difficult aspect is being away from my family, especially missing Christmas morning with my children," says James McClintock, Ph.D. But, the researchers are not the only people that make sacrifices for science. "I believe it's toughest on those left behind," says Charles Amsler, Ph.D. "The person at home is constantly reminded of his or her companion and is carrying the normal domestic load for both."
