Even sex can become a chore for couples who are trying to conceive. But when is the inability to conceive considered infertility?

Michael Steinkampf, M.D., director of UAB's Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, suggests couples who have been unable to conceive after a year of unprotected intercourse seek the advice of an infertility expert. The recommendation drops to six months if the woman is over 35. With assisted reproductive procedures, the chance of pregnancy for many infertile couples compares favorably to that of a fertile couple, which is 25 percent within any given month.
