TV, video games, microwaves and unsafe neighborhoods all contribute to the new national epidemic of childhood obesity, according to UAB pediatrician Frank Franklin, M.D.

"While genetics play a role in childhood obesity, environment is the strongest link." TV and videos lead to a sedentary lifestyle while unsafe neighborhoods and lack of playgrounds help keep kids indoors. The average child sees 10,000 food advertisements a year, and 80 percent of commercials on children's programs are for food products. The convenient microwave oven means many children select and prepare their own meals, and kids don't tend to make healthy choices.
