World's Best Math Minds Come To UAB

Some people think mathematics is only good for balancing a checkbook or keeping up with a household budget. But math can also be used to explain a variety of problems and solutions in other scientific fields. "Many mathematicians are interested in mathematics inspired by other sciences such as physics, chemistry and biology," says mathematics professor Rudi Weikard, Ph.D. "These mathematicians borrow problems from other fields, and then through their mathematical research either validate or invalidate conclusions sometimes reached by more intuitive or less deductive methods." More than 200 of the world's leading mathematicians and physicists from more than 20 countries will meet at UAB March 26-30 to take part in the 2002 International Conference on Differential Equations and Mathematical Physics.
