Newswise — CHICAGO, March 8, 2016 -- The American Pain Society (APS), www.americanpainsociety.org, will host its 35th annual scientific meeting May 11-14 at the Austin Convention Center. APS is the leading multidisciplinary professional society in the United States dedicated to advancing pain-related research, education, treatment and team-oriented professional practice.

More than 1,000 scientists and clinicians specializing in pain and pain management will attend. Clinical, translational and pre-clinical and basic science pain research is the major focus of the meeting, and the nation’s leading pain scientists will present their discoveries at the conference.

*** Results with Marijuana for Treating Pain: Is there a role for cannabis and its derivatives in pain management? Clinicians and researchers will evaluate progress in exploiting the cannabinoid system to develop treatments for chronic pain and report new data on patients who have used medical marijuana.

*** Can Stem Cells Treat Pain?: Symposium panelists will report new preclinical data showing that stem cell injections, especially bone marrow stromal cells, can produce long-term pain relief.

*** Pain Psychology 101: Psychologists and other clinicians who work with pain patients will participate in a symposium to review psychological principles at the core of pain psychology and relate how psychological factors influence pain assessments and patient care.

*** New Findings on Arthritis Pain: Pain is the defining symptom of arthritis but available treatment options offer inadequate relief and are associated with serious long-term health risks. Two sessions at the meeting will cover new approaches to designing better therapies based on new discoveries on the interaction of between joint damage and sensory neurons and on the sensitization of the peripheral nervous system.

*** Poster Presentations: Author attended poster sessions are May 11, 12 and 13. This year, there will be more than 450 posters reporting on new research in the study and treatment of pain.
