Toothpaste Significantly Reduces Dental Plaque and Inflammation Throughout the Body

For decades, research has suggested a link between oral health and inflammatory diseases affecting the entire body — in particular, heart attacks and strokes. Results from a randomized trial of a novel plaque identifying toothpaste, Plaque HD®, produced statistically significant reductions in dental plaque and inflammation throughout the body as measured by high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), a sensitive marker for future heart attacks and strokes.

UF/IFAS Researcher: Study Shows Federal School Lunch Guidelines Lead to Healthier Choices

Researchers investigated how the nutritional content of National School Lunch Program entrées chosen by students varied across different socioeconomic and demographic groups and impacted their health. When healthier menu items replaced less healthy items, researchers found the total calories of the students’ lunch choices decreased about 4 percent. Calories from fat decreased 18 percent, and those from sodium decreased by 8 percent.

In a paper published today in Scientific Reports, Assistant Professor of Geology Mainak Mookherjee explores how feldspar, one of the most important minerals in the Earth’s crust, changes under pressure. Typically, materials become stiffer when pressure is applied, but Mookherjee found that these pale-colored crystals actually become softer under extreme pressures.

UF/IFAS Researchers Project Beetle Could Cause $17 Billion Damage to Loblolly Pine in South

For the study, researchers looked at the economic impact of anticipated invasions of more ambrosia beetles from Asia into the southern United States. Invasive wood borers, such as the ambrosia beetle, transmit disease-carrying fungi to several North American trees, and it’s not clear whether trees such as pines will face similar threats in the future, the researchers said.

The study’s findings suggest chitosan microparticles kill bacteria in cow uteri, said KC Jeong, assistant professor of animal sciences at UF/IFAS. He said it may someday be possible for chitosan microparticles to be used to help humans who have become ill from consuming E. coli-contaminated food, but more research is needed.

Immune and Targeted Therapies with Radiation Therapy Improves Outcomes for Melanoma Brain Metastases Patients, Say Moffitt Researchers

In their most recent Annals of Oncology publication, Moffitt researchers sought to determine if patients with melanoma brain metastases treated with immune and targeted therapies had improved outcomes over patients treated with conventional chemotherapy. They retrospectively analyzed data from 96 patients with melanoma brain metastases who were treated with stereotactic radiation therapy within 3 months of different targeted therapies (anti–PD-1 therapy, anti–CTLA-4 therapy, BRAF inhibitor plus a MEK inhibitor, or a BRAF inhibitor alone) or conventional chemotherapy.
