Decaf Coffee Increases Risk of RA

Older women who drink four or more cups of decaffeinated coffee a day are more than twice as likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis, while women who drink more than three cups of tea a day are much less likely to develop the disease, according to a recent UAB study. Ted Mikuls, M.D., assistant professor of medicine at UAB, will present findings during the American College of Rheumatology's Annual Scientific Meeting, Nov. 11-15, in San Francisco. Findings do not support an association between caffeine consumption and a reduced risk of disease. Rather, researchers speculate findings may be attributable to how decaffeinated coffee is processed or to the antioxidants in tea.
