As another winter storm approaches the Northeast, Jessica Spaccio, a climatologist with the NOAA-funded Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell University says while the winter has been tough on some areas, for the vast majority it has not been record-breaking.

Spaccio says:

“Continuing the trend of an active winter season, another winter storm is heading up the coast toward the Northeast. The National Weather Service has Winter Storm Warnings for Georgia through Vermont. Snowfall forecasts range from over a foot of snow near the center of the storm’s path to nothing farther inland.

“This winter seems especially cold and snowy – but how bad has it been?

“In part, it depends on where you are. Some areas have continued to be in the path of these storms, other have been inundated with lake effect snow, and others actually haven’t seen that much snow. The temperatures have been colder than normal for most areas, but not record-breaking.”
