University of Arkansas Legal Scholar Available for Analysis of Oral Arguments on Same-Sex Marriage

With the Supreme Court of the United States hearing oral arguments today in the case of Obergefell v. Hodges, which addresses the matter of marriage equality and the constitutional status of state bans on same-sex marriage, the American Sociological Association (ASA) has a number of sociologists available to discuss same-sex marriage.

Discussing your sexual history with a doctor, or anyone for that matter, can be an uncomfortable experience. But for many transgender people, the conversation never takes place because they aren’t seeking health care.
Here at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, transgender issues are not new. Our Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine has been supporting the health of transgender youth for nearly 20 years. While many are becoming more familiar with the subject now, there is still great opportunity to advance understanding in the community. Johanna Olson, MD, is a pediatrician specializing in adolescent medicine at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles where she directs the Center for Transyouth Health and Development. In an effort to increase knowledge about the transgender experience, Olson frequently speaks to media on the topic.
Only 9 percent of U.S. academic medical practices have procedures for connecting patients to LGBT-competent physicians, and only 4 percent had policies for identifying those physicians. In addition, only 15 percent had lists of LGBT-competent physicians.
