Newswise — Loyola University Chicago Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing recently received two grants to support the School-based Health Center (SBHC) at Proviso East High School. Loyola faculty and students have provided health education and services to high school students at the SBHC for more than 10 years.
“These grants will allow us to continue to fulfill Loyola’s mission to provide health-care services and education to underserved populations,” said Diana Hackbarth, RN, PhD, FAAN, project director, School-based Health Center, and professor, MNSON. “The School-based Health Center provides valuable resources, which will help students continue to thrive both inside and outside of the classroom.”
The Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) awarded the school $123,000. The SBHC is one of 42 in Illinois to receive support from IDHS. The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Nurse Education Practice and Retention program also presented the school with $297,280. The HRSA funding is part of a five-year grant of more than $1.3 million awarded to the school of nursing to help educate the primary health-care workforce of the future.
The SBHC is staffed by Loyola faculty, nurse practitioners, primary care physicians, registered dietitians and a social worker who provide primary health care, mental health services, dental care, nutrition counseling and a variety of innovative health promotion interventions. The SBHC also serves as a clinical site for Loyola undergraduate and graduate nursing students, dietetic interns, medical students and residents and is fully accredited by the Illinois Department of Human Services.
