Newswise — NYU Langone Medical Center (NYU Langone) and Winthrop-University Hospital (Winthrop) today announced they have signed a non-binding letter of intent to begin discussions concerning a potential transaction that would bring the two organizations together to create an integrated healthcare network for the New York metropolitan region.

According to John Collins, Winthrop’s President and CEO, “This first step represents a momentous milestone for Winthrop. As Long Island’s first community hospital, we have grown into a major academic medical center, and with our services in such demand, it became obvious that we needed to expand further, physically and geographically.”
NYU Langone, whose main hospital campus is on the East side of Manhattan, has more than 175 ambulatory sites throughout the region, with more than 40 practices in Queens and Long Island.
Winthrop’s main campus is located in Mineola on Long Island (central Nassau County) and includes an onsite dialysis center, CyberKnife Center and the Cancer Center for Kids. Winthrop also has multiple ambulatory sites throughout the surrounding area, including a newly expanded ambulatory surgery center in Garden City, its Specialty Center East in Deer Park, and an NYC CyberKnife Center in Manhattan. Additionally, its newly renovated 7,500-square-foot Trauma Center is the only facility in Nassau County with full adult and pediatric capabilities.

Both parties will now engage in due diligence with an intention of negotiating and signing definitive agreements and seeking regulatory approvals. Any new partnership would reflect a commitment to the highest standards of clinical care, supported by the most advanced technologies, and integrated with world-class research and teaching programs that would further enhance the collective abilities of the two entities.
