Newswise — Seattle, Wash. – According to new research, injection of 3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB) offers similar protection as a low calorie diet against nerve degeneration in rats with glaucoma. The research is being presented at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) this week in Seattle, Wash.
Rats were divided into three groups: low calorie, injection with 3HB and a control group. Neurodegeneration was found to be significantly higher in the control group than the low calorie and 3HB groups.
Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease that can result in blindness. 3HB is believed to interact with the pentose phosphate pathway.
