Goals Help Doctors Perform Better

When doctors are given goals that reflect high standards achieved by other doctors in their field, they rise to the task, according to a UAB study in the June 13 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Catarina Kiefe, M.D., Ph.D., lead investigator of the study, says "viewing personal performance within the context of peer performance is a powerful motivator for change.

When performance goals are combined with standard types of feedback such as chart review and review of individual performance, patient care significantly improves." The benchmarks are based on an average of the top 10 percent of doctors in a group who perform certain therapies or treatments most often.
