As harmful effects of noise are becoming more widely known, popular internet websites are increasingly being used as resources of information. For the International Year of Sound 2020 (#IYS2020), the Acoustical Society of America and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, part of the CDC, took the lead in designing the online event Wiki4YearOfSound2020. The event will facilitate the improvement of Wikipedia content in topics related to acoustics, communication, music, noise and soundscapes.

A new indoor software tracking system conceived at the Henry Ford Innovations (HFI) in Detroit for use in hospitals is being compared to GPS for its functionality. The two developers behind the system called Novatrack say it has the potential to be a “game changer” in health care for its capability and precision to optimize operations and improve efficiencies.

Post-doctoral training is a critical career stage for researchers in the life sciences yet interviewing for a post-doctoral position is largely an unregulated process. Without regulation, interviews are susceptible to unconscious biases that may lead to discrimination against certain demographic groups (e.g., women and minorities). Using data from an online survey of post-docs, we show that interview procedures for post-doctoral positions in the life sciences are correlated with several factors (e.g., candidate demographics) in ways that may bias the outcome of interviews. We discuss key components of interviews and suggest that conducting standardized, well-planned interviews that are less susceptible to unconscious biases may help increase the retention of women and under-represented minorities in the life sciences.

Press conferences for the 178th Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America will be held Tuesday, Dec. 3, in Hospitality Suite 3103 of the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego. They will focus on research into sounds from virtual reality to the deep ocean and making music from tiny atoms and 3D printing. In addition, 2020 will be celebrated as the International Year of Sound, and a kickoff event will take place during the meeting.

Network and hospital officials celebrated the opening of the Hackensack Meridian Health pharmacy at Ocean Medical Center with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Hackensack Meridian Health Ocean Medical Center revealed its plans last Thursday to begin construction on the new Heart and Vascular Center. The $19.5 million investment will encompass 17,750 square feet above the Emergency Department and will combine heart and vascular services on one floor to address the growing number of procedures performed at the medical center and provide convenience for patients.

Excessive drinking by workers can place a burden on colleagues, whether through absenteeism, reduced productivity or alcohol-related accidents in the workplace. Research in high-income countries has revealed the high economic cost of co-workers’ drinking, but little is known about alcohol’s harm to others in the workplace in lower- or middle-income countries. Researchers from Australia, Sweden and the USA have published a new report in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research comparing the impact of co-workers’ drinking on working people in 12 countries.

Taking place at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa Conference Center in Atlantic City on Saturday, November 23, 700 guests joined together to honor Gordon Litwin, chair of the Hackensack Meridian Health Board of Trustees, for his longtime dedication to improving health care for New Jersey residents. They join 441 other AAAS members named new fellows because of their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications.
